Smarter Prompts, Stronger Lessons: A Checklist for CTE Teachers Using AI

As more Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers explore the benefits of Generative AI to improve instruction, one question rises to the top: How do I ask better questions to get better results? Whether you’re creating a lesson plan, designing a performance task, or crafting a quiz, the quality of your AI prompt makes all the difference.

That’s why we’ve developed the CTE Prompt Planning Framework—a practical guide to help teachers build detailed, effective prompts when using tools like ChatGPT. This checklist outlines the key elements to include in your prompt, such as:

  • Context

  • CTE Program Area

  • Grade Level or Student Experience

  • Instructional Topic or Unit

  • Instructional Format

  • Output Format

  • Tone or Style Preference

  • Optional additions like academic integration, keywords, examples, and special constraints

Example Prompt

I teach 12th-grade students in an advanced automotive class. They are preparing for ASE certification and have experience working on brake systems. I’m developing a performance task focused on diagnosing and repairing ABS brake system issues. The instruction will occur in a diagnostic lab setting, and I want students to complete a written report afterward. Please generate a diagnostic checklist, sample case study scenario, and grading rubric. Format it as a printable handout. Use technical language appropriate for pre-professional students, and integrate science concepts such as hydraulics and electrical systems.

With clearer prompts, AI tools can generate more targeted, relevant, and creative ideas that align with your curriculum and classroom needs. The checklist is especially useful for teachers who want to save time, integrate academic standards, and support higher-order thinking—without having to start from scratch.
